Live-Action Gundam Movie Will Be Canon to the Universal Century, Noah Centineo Confirms
The upcoming live-action Gundam movie will take place within the Universal Century timeline, according to star Noah Centineo.
Centineo recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, where he discussed the upcoming live-action adaptation.
During the interview, Centineo revealed that the film will be canon to Gundam's original anime universe and will take place within the Universal Century, the timeline centered around the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.
“It’s a big action romance space movie. It lives in the Universal Century canon of Gundam, for those who know. I don’t know how much I can tell you about what characters are in it, but I will say you can compare it to a non-Shakespearean Romeo And Juliet in Space.”
The Universal Century was introduced with the original Mobile Suit Gundam, the legendary anime series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, which followed Amuro Ray after he discovered the Gundam and became involved in the war between the Earth Federation and Zeon.
The timeline has since been revisited through numerous Gundam productions, including the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway film trilogy. The second film, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, was released earlier this year, with a third movie planned for the future.
Gundam has also explored alternate timelines, most recently with Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, which presented a different take on the original conflict.
With Centineo confirming that the live-action movie will take place within the Universal Century, it remains unclear which characters will appear in the film. The movie stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, but it has not been confirmed that they will portray existing Universal Century characters.
The live-action Gundam movie is being developed by Legendary Entertainment, with Netflix serving as its streaming platform. The movie stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo.
