Sayonara, Unicorn Gundam: A Final Farewell After Nine Years
After nine years in Odaiba, the life-size Unicorn Gundam statue has officially reached its final farewell.
The Final Ceremony was held at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza on August 29 at 7:30 p.m., just two days before the statue’s exhibition officially comes to an end on August 31. The event was also livestreamed through the official Gundam Channel, allowing fans around the world to watch the final ceremony.
The evening featured a special live performance by Hiroyuki Sawano and SennaRin, who have both contributed music to the Gundam franchise, including Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe.
The ceremony also featured the special presentation “UNICORN GUNDAM Statue ― BEYOND POSSIBILITY ―”, which had been running for a limited 10-day period beginning August 22.
After the performances and special presentation, the ceremony turned toward the people who had supported the statue throughout its nine-year run.
“Thank you very much to everyone who gathered here, as well as everyone who watched over the event through the livestream.”
The message continued by reflecting on the years the Unicorn Gundam spent standing in Odaiba.
“Thanks to all of your support, the life-size Unicorn Gundam statue was able to stand here for nine long years.”
It also looked back at the memories created around the statue, including the time fans spent at the location and the people they met along the way.
“We hope that the time you spent here, the memories you made with the people you met, and the Unicorn Gundam itself will continue to live on in your hearts.”
The final message then looked toward the future.
“As long as people continue to hold onto their hopes and dreams, those feelings will carry forward into the future.”
The message expressed hope that fans would someday have the chance to meet a new Gundam again.
“The future of humanity is something we create with our own hands.”
And then came the final words from Haro:
“Thank you, everyone. Thank you. Until we meet again.”
The life-size Unicorn Gundam began its exhibition in September 2017 and has stood outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza for nearly nine years. Its official exhibition will end on August 31.
