Gundam RG: XARX-ZERO Director Kenji Kamiyama Discusses New Timeline, Confirms April 2027 Air Date

Director Kenji Kamiyama has shared new details about Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (Alex Zero) in a newly released interview conducted during San Diego Comic-Con.

The new Gundam TV anime is scheduled to air in April 2027 and will introduce its own timeline and setting.

A New Gundam Timeline

According to Kamiyama, XARX-ZERO tells a story about humanity fighting for survival on Earth after an interstellar object arrives from outside the solar system. The object later becomes known as the Apocalypse.

The story follows young boys and girls as they face conflict and grow amid the war surrounding this threat.

Unlike series set within established Gundam timelines, XARX-ZERO will have its own unique timeline. Kamiyama said the decision allowed the team to develop an original setting that differs fundamentally from previous Gundam series.

Kamiyama has been involved with the project for around five years. He said the opportunity to direct Gundam was particularly meaningful due to the influence the original Mobile Suit Gundam had on him.

Connection to GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT

XARX-ZERO also shares its setting with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT.

Kamiyama explained that the game development team initially proposed a concept involving Gundams fighting giant space monster-like enemies. The anime team then developed the setting, including the nature of the enemy and the structure of the war.

The game team later developed its own story set 100 years after the events connected to the anime.

The shared enemy concept was also developed with the game in mind. Kamiyama explained that the enemy was initially conceived around the game's controls and gameplay, with the anime team adapting the concept to suit its own storytelling.

The Meaning Behind Ray and the Color Red

Kamiyama also discussed the protagonist, Ray.

The director explained that naming the protagonist Ray was an intentional choice. He wanted viewers to immediately recognize that Ray is the central character within this new timeline without requiring lengthy explanations.

The color red also has a deliberate role in the series. Other characters associated with red will appear, with Kamiyama saying the choice was intended to help viewers intuitively understand the significance of the color within the Gundam series.
